ASTM E8 allows for many different gripping devices. The gripping device must hold the specimen in a manner so that the axial tension applied by the test machine is along the center line of the test specimen. These single purpose grip or sample holders are matched to tensile testing of shouldered or button head tests samples tested per ASTM E8. Shouldered Gripping Device: The figure shows the ASTM suggested shoulder grip device. The test specimen is has a machined shoulder that fits into the grips for a secure hold during the tension test.
