ASTM E8 allows for many different gripping devices. The gripping device must hold the specimen in a manner so that the axial tension applied by the test machine is along the center line of the test specimen. These single purpose grip or sample holders are matched to tensile testing of shouldered or button head tests samples tested per ASTM E8. Threaded Gipping Device: The figure shows the ASTM suggested threaded grip device. This device is very similar to the shoulder gripping device, except for the shoulder if the test specimen is replaced by threads. Also, the grip has threads machined in for the test specimen to be screwed into.
