ASTM E8 allows for many different gripping devices. The gripping device must hold the specimen in a manner so that the axial tension applied by the test machine is along the center line of the test specimen. These single purpose grip or sample holders are matched to tensile testing of shouldered or button head tests samples tested per ASTM E8. The most common gripping device used for tension testing is a wedge grip. Wedge grips are ideal for long straight tests specimens.
