Self Tightening Spring Action Grips
TestResources’ Self Tightening Spring Action Grip designs are simple and cost effective gripping solutions that are the ideal solution for testing highly flexible plastics and elastomeric materials. The self tightening spring action grips are offered in two basic design styles, four different product families and a dozen standard variations. We offer a wide selection of options in both standard and custom engineered solutions. All of our self tightening spring action tensile grips will fit any brand of test machine through the use of an adapter.
Family | Style | Max Force | Max Thickness |
---|---|---|---|
G230 | Scissor | 2 kN (450 lbf) | 28 mm (1.1 in) |
G11 | Scissor | 5 to 50 kN (1125 to 11250 lbf) | 48 mm (1.9 in) |
G7 | Eccentric Roller (Single) | 1 to 20 kN (225 to 4500 lbf) | 16 mm (0.63 in) |
G766 | Eccentric Roller (Dual) | 5 kN (1125 lbf) | 15 or 40 mm (0.6 or 1.6 in) |

Fits Any Brand Test Machine
Our grips and fixtures will fit any brand of test machine. We offer adapters that allow the grips and fixtures to be used on test machines from TestResources, Instron®, MTS®, Tinius Olsen® and every other brand of machine.
Self Tightening Spring Action Grips for Highly Flexible Plastics and Elastomeric Materials
Self tightening spring action grips are ideal for testing highly flexible plastics, elastomeric materials and for testing samples that exhibit large reduction in cross section area under load. The spring action model was designed to be self centering and place the test sample on test machine centerline. The self tightening design provides positive non-slip gripping action that also provides fast and easy clamping that is both simple and budget friendly.
Self Tightening Spring Action Grip Styles
Two proven design styles, four different product families and a dozen standard variations.
Scissor Tensile Grips
Self clamping design produces strong increase in grip force during the test. Grip force is proportional to tensile load. The scissor style grip can grip any samples geometry including round (wire), flat (sheet), irregular shaped and even conical shapes. Scissor grips are commonly used as the upper grip in tear growth and peel tests.
Eccentric Roller Grips
Single Eccentric Roller Grips for Flat Samples
The single eccentric roller grip uses either a serrated or smooth eccentric roller type clamping action. The single lever reduces time and effort required to load samples. Standard grips with widths up to 100 mm (4 in) are available.
Dual Eccentric Roller Grips for Round Samples
The dual eccentric roller grips produces automatic centering action of samples. The rollers are constrained to operate together to produce high clamp loads and non slip operation.
Can be Configured to Your Specific Application
We can configure grips and jaws to fit any sample geometry including round samples like wire and fasteners as well as flat test specimens. Our experienced engineers will work with you to ensure your test system is configured to meet your specific application requirements.

Compatible with Different Testing Environments
Self tightening spring action tensile grips can be constructed of different materials and surface treatments such as stainless steel, titanium and nickel coating. Nickel coated versions can be used inside hot and cold temperature chambers. The nickel coating helps protect the grips from corrosion caused by condensation from the freeze/thaw cycles inside the chamber. It also protects the grips from moisture inside humidity chambers which helps protect the grips from rusting over time. Nickel coated grips or grips made from corrosion resistant materials such as 316 stainless steel or titanium have an important benefit to people whose labs are in humid climates or near coastal areas of the ocean. Stainless steel versions are used in harsh environments. The stainless steel material protects the grips from corrosion.
Standard and Custom Engineered Solutions
We offer many standard products as well as custom solutions. However, our modular platform enables us to adjust designs for any application requirement. We understand that every sample can be unique. With this in mind, we offer custom engineered grips to match your specimen with any test force. Through the use of some of our standard elements, we can configure a wide variety of unique solutions without paying a “custom price” or waiting months to receive your order. Our modular platform approach satisfies virtually any application requirement.

Wide Range of Supporting Options
We offer a wide range of supporting options for our self tightening spring action tensile grips. Some of these options include:
Variety of Jaw Surfaces - We offer a wide variety of jaw surfaces for various sample types including:
- Smooth
- Rubber-coated
- Diamond grit
- Serrated
- V serrated jaws for round samples
- Wave/Corrugated
- Round serrated jaws Custom jaws for pulling the projectile out of ammunition casings
Roller Options - Different roller options are available for eccentric roller grips including:
- Knurled Roller
- Smooth Roller
- Custom
Optional Pneumatic Cylinders - Due to our modular design principles, pneumatic cylinders can be added onto many of our scissor style tensile grips designs, bringing ease of operator use and repeatability at an affordable price. Pneumatic cylinders help to provide increased initial clamp load on samples and thus not allowing the sample to slip. Our pneumatic actuated grips produce active clamping for samples with high Poisson's ratio because samples with high poisson's ratio tend to slip out of the jaws. Pneumatic jaws are beneficial where machine efficiency and throughput is important. Loading time can be significantly reduced with pneumatics. Additionally, operator fatigue is reduced which results in more consistent clamping load from sample to sample and operator to operator. This ensures more accurate and consistent results.
