Threaded & Buttonhead Sample Holders
TestResources, threaded-end and shouldered buttonhead tensile test fixtures are ideal for threaded-end and shouldered round metal test samples. These common fixtures for universal test machines are designed to fit all threads, sample sizes, strengths and to meet industry test standards. Custom engineered solutions and sample adapter cups are available. We offer a wide selection of options in both standard and custom engineered solutions. Custom engineered solutions and sample adapter cups are available. All of our threaded and buttonhead sample holders will fit any brand of test machine through the use of an adapter.

Fits Any Brand Test Machine
Our grips and fixtures will fit any brand of test machine. We offer adapters that allow the grips and fixtures to be used on test machines from TestResources, Instron®, MTS®, Tinius Olsen® and every other brand of machine.
Metallic Tensile Test Applications
The threaded and buttonhead sample holder’s simple design makes them quick and easy to use. Each holder accepts a range of different sample sizes (cross sectional areas). Threaded sample holders from M3-M40 (english equivalent thread sizes are also available) and from 20 to 600 kN (4.5 to 135 kip) force capacity or more. Buttonhead sample holders for samples from 3 to 56 mm (0.12 to 2.2 in) diameter and from 20 to 1000 kN (4.5 to 225 kip) force capacity. Fixtures with self alignment for uniaxial tension tests to minimize bending strains are available and high alignment fixtures for low-cycle or high-cycle fatigue applications are also available.
Applications:
- Tensile static and tensile cyclic loading
- Fatigue rated grips that are suitable for high cycle fatigue tests are also available
- Steel and nonferrous metal products
- Round specimens with either threaded-End and shouldered buttonhead
Our tensile test fixtures can be configured to meet specific ASTM, ISO, DIN, EN requirements.
Common test standards:
- ASTM A370 Tensile Tests of Steel Products
- ASTM B557 Tensile Tests of Aluminum Products
- ASTM E8 Tensile Tests of Metals
- ASTM E466 Conducting Force Controlled Constant Amplitude Axial Fatigue Tests of Metallic Materials
- ASTM E606 Strain-Controlled Fatigue Testing
- ASTM F606 Mechanical Properties of Externally or Internally Threaded Fasteners, Washers and Rivets
- SAE J429 Tensile and Proof Load Testing of Bolts, Screws, Studs and Round Threaded Products
- SAE J1199 Mechanical Properties of Metric Externally Threaded Steel Fasteners

Compatible with Different Testing Environments
Tensile fixtures can be constructed of different materials and surface treatments such as stainless steel, titanium and nickel coating. Nickel coated versions can be used inside hot and cold temperature chambers. The nickel coating helps protect the grips from corrosion caused by condensation from the freeze/thaw cycles inside the chamber. It also protects the grips from moisture inside humidity chambers which helps protect the grips from rusting over time. Nickel coated grips or grips made from corrosion resistant materials such as 316 stainless steel or titanium have an important benefit to people whose labs are in humid climates or near coastal areas of the ocean. Stainless steel versions are used in harsh environments such as saline bathes. The stainless steel material protects the grips from corrosion. Wedges for bolt testing to simulate more complex testing environments are also available
Standard and Custom Engineered Solutions
We offer multiple standard products as well as custom solutions. Standard tensile fixtures handle samples up to 1000 kN (224.8 kip) force capacity. However, our modular platform enables us to adjust designs for any application requirement including customized bodies and jaws for larger test samples. We understand that every sample can be unique. With this in mind, we offer custom engineered grips and inserts to match your specimen with any test force. Through the use of some of our standard elements, we can configure a wide variety of unique solutions without paying a “custom price” or waiting months to receive your order. Our modular platform approach satisfies virtually any application requirement.
