Special tensile grips for biological planar biaxial test samples

Constitutive modeling of biological and tissue based soft biomaterials is common in many surgical, medical device and physiological applications. Planar biaxial tests of biological samples provide more realistic test data than uniaxial testing because fibers may realign along the test axis which alters the measured mechanical properties.

TestResources’ 574LE2 Planar Biaxial Test Machine performs accurate mechanical testing and property analysis of soft planar biomaterials, native tissues, and tissue-engineered scaffolds. It is also capable of testing medical devices and performing biomechanical tests that require higher forces than tissues. The 574 Planar Biaxial Test Machine consists of four fatigue-rated linear actuators capable of high elongation and high test speed. They are mounted on a horizontal air-suspended isolation table with load cells on each major axis. Load cells are available for all sizes and types of samples. A heated saline bath and a digital video extensometer are commonly selected options. A variety of sample grips are also available including the popular hook type.

Researchers at Washington University use the TestResources Planar Biaxial Tester for their biomechanics and tissue engineering research programs. With the 574 Series Planar Biaxial test machine, they can compare the properties of new replacement tissues with the performance of native tissues.
