ASTM C 1684 (C-1684) determines the flexural strength of rod shape specimens of advanced ceramic materials at ambient temperature. This method permits testing of machined, drawn, or as-fired rod shaped specimens and may also be used for glass. Four-point-1/4 point is preferred but three-point loading is permitted. The flexure strength is computed based on simple beam theory and the assumptions are the the material is isotropic and homogeneous, the moduli of elasticity in tension and compression are identical, and the material is linear elastic. This test method may be used for quality control, characterization, and material development.
