
ASTM D1002 is commonly used as a guideline for testing the strength of adhesives to bond metals. This testing standard can be used on single-lap-joint specimens and can be used to determine adhesive strength, surface preparation parameters and adhesive environmental durability.
ASTM D1002
ASTM D1002 recommends that the lap shear specimen is 25.4 mm (1”) wide, with an overlap of 12.7 mm (0.5”). Metal thickness should be 1.62 mm (0.064”) and the entire length of the bonded specimen should be 177.8 mm (7”). ASTM D1002 requires testing for the following measurements:
- Maximum force
- Maximum shear stress
- Type of failure (adhesive or cohesive)
- Testing procedure
An electromechanical universal testing machine can be used to conduct a lap shear test. First, load each end of the specimen into the test machine grips and apply a force at a controlled rate of 1,200 to 1,400 psi/min and at a cross head control rate of 1.3 mm/min (0.05 in/min) until you reach a breaking point. Record the maximum force applied.
