ASTM D6742 is the standard test method for tensile and compression testing of filled-hole polymer matrix composite laminates. A close tolerance fastener or pin is inserted into the composite test specimen hole and the specimen is loaded in uniaxial tension or compression until failure. Unlike a bearing response test, the pin or fastener is not loaded or used as a load transfer mechanism between test specimens and test fixtures. The pin or fastener simply fills the hole in the composite laminate. Failure must occur at or near the hole in the composite specimen for valid test data. ASTM D6742 is a supplementary test method to ASTM D5766 for open-hole tension and ASTM D6484 for open-hole compression of polymer matrix composite laminates.
