These ASTM E139 creep and stress rupture test of metals test methods cover the determination of the amount of deformation as a function of time (creep test) and the measurement of the time for fracture to occur when sufficient force is present (rupture test) for materials when under constant tensile forces at constant temperature. Often a furnace is used in this ASTM E139 test to heat the test material. Consideration of temperature is critical in this ASTM E139 test because of the increasing ductility of metallic materials at increasing temperatures.
ASTM E139 rupture tests, properly interpreted, provide a measure of the ultimate load-carrying ability of a material as a function of time. ASTM E139 Creep tests measure the load-carrying ability for limited deformations. The two ASTM E139 tests complement each other in defining the load-carrying ability of a material. These ASTM E139 specifications also include the essential requirements for testing equipment. These ASTM E139 test methods list the information which should be included in reports of tests. E139 refers to ASTM E8 for specimen geometry. Refer to Figure 9 of ASTM E8: threaded specimens. This is the easiest and least expensive way to grip specimens in the furnace, with threaded high temperature pull rods.
For ASTM E139, you will need a creep tester with the ability to load 100 Kn at 1000 °C. The question we typically ask if it will be a material test or a product test. If it is a product test you may want the 316 Universal Test Machine with a furnace for higher force and larger specimens. If you will be doing a material test, then the specimen could be smaller. Therefore, we would recommend a 313 Universal Test Machine with an elevated temperature furnace. We also recommend that you consider a high-temperature extensometer, such as our E3448.
