The American Society of Testing Materials uses this standard for alloy development. ASTM E1450 is an effective test to determine and compare the strength and ductility of different alloys. The test involves placing a test specimen in a helium bath and allying a uniaxial tensile stress. The test method covers the measurement of yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction of area. ASTM E1450 is also concerned with serrated yielding, adiabatic heating, and strain-rate effects that can occur in materials at such low temperatures. Testing equipment that has crosshead displacement control is necessary for this test. At such low temperatures using a force control or high strain rates can result in serrated yielding.
