ASTM F1044 is a standard test method for shear testing calcium phosphate adhesion strength to metallic substrates under uniaxial shear stress. Calcium phosphate and metallic coatings are used on a wide variety of metal substrates around the world, and commonly on orthopedic implants. Measuring the adhesive quality of these products is essential due to their direct impact on implant degradation and bioactivity.
ASTM F1044
ASTM F1044 is a testing method which has replaced ASTM F1658. This newer version provides a means of testing and comparing different calcium phosphate thermal sprays to determine the high adhesion characteristics.
Testing Procedure
Acquire a polymeric adhesive that is capable of bonding the coating on the test specimen with a shear strength of at least 34.5 MPa (5000 psi). Cure the adhesive agent and prepare a minimum of five test specimens. Apply the coating of interest to the face of each in the same manner as for actual production devices.
Next, apply a shear load to each test specimen at a constant rate of cross-head speed of 0.25 cm/min (0.1 in./min). Continue the test until the components have been completely separated. Record the maximum load applied.
Consider the right grip for the job. Misaligned grips can easily introduce bending stresses that are not included in the typical stress calculation. By means of our testing expertise and modular product design, we will help find the testing solution that is right for you.
