Calcium phosphate and metallic coatings are used worldwide in numerous applications. ASTM F1160 covers the procedure for determining the shear and bending fatigue performance of calcium phosphate and porous and nonporous metallic coatings, and for the bending fatigue performance of metallic coatings oversprayed with calcium phosphate. The types of coatings that this test works for include plasma-sprayed titanium and plasma-sprayed hydroxylapatite.

Testing Procedure

ASTM F1160 calls for two types of testing: shear and bending fatigue. ASTM F1160 assesses the fatigue shear adhesive strength of the coating layer to the substrate. Coated test specimens 19 mm in diameter are connected to uncoated specimens with a structural adhesive. A fatigue shear stress is applied to pull apart the coating from the substrate.

Secondly, the standard calls for bending fatigue tests. Coatings can sometimes weaken the substrate itself. This test measures the bending fatigue strength of the substrate covered with the coating in comparison to the uncoated substrate. Both tests are typically performed on at least five specimens and should be halted after 10 million cycles or after the testing specimen failure.
