ASTM F1888 is the standard test method for testing the compression-displacement of softballs and baseballs. The ASTM F1888 test method is used for quality control and measurement of performance characteristics. Although the loads specified in ASTM F1888 aren't designed to be the same as those experienced by a baseball or softball in use, the results are used to verify compliance with baseball and softball specifications and ensure product consistency. The baseball or softball is compressed between two flat plates to a displacement of 0.25 in., at a constant rate of crosshead travel. Each baseball or softball is tested twice, rotating the ball 90 degrees between tests.
