ASTM F 2256 (F-2256) determines the means for comparison of the adhesive strengths of tissue adhesives intended for use as surgical adhesives or sealants, or both, on soft tissue. Tissue adhesives have recently become more commonly used in the medical industry. The applications of tissue adhesives include sutures, bandages, and surgical wound dressing. A weak adhesive could lead to infection or tearing, whereas an adhesive which is too strong could lead to tissue damage upon removal. Therefore the tissue strength must be mechanically defined before the device is used on humans.
