The TAPPI Elmendorf testing method T414 measures the tearing resistance of paper perpendicular to the plane of the paper specimen, and the tearing resistance of paper when torn out of plane. Out of plane tearing is a tearing mode that is typically done by individuals when deliberately tearing paper. Out of plane paper tearing differs form in plane tearing. In plane tearing of paper is the measurement of tear resistance when a piece of paper is torn along a 90 degree edge.
Elmendorf testing per TAPPI T414 tears multiple pieces of paper with a pendulum tester. The energy to tear the paper is easily measured and the tear resistance of paper is measured. TAPPI T414 define tear testing force as work divided by length
