High Temperature Testing of Cermamics

Researchers at The Ohio State University tested the mechanical strength properties of materials used continuously at elevated temperatures to predict life. The tests involved ceramic materials loaded in a special equibiaxial test setup with a ring on ring bend or flexural loading, similar to ASTM C1499, except at 1,000°C (1,800°F). The test required a specially engineered high temperature furnace and a test machine capable of a very slow test speed or loading rate (e.g. 10 microns per minute).

Ring on Ring is a test method that targets ceramic composites including monolithic, whisker-reinforced or particle-reinforced, and discontinuous fiber reinforced types. Special alumina ceramic test fixtures were made with specific contact radii and different ring on ring diameters. Its important that the sample be manufactured flat for the test to be successful.
