4 Point Flexural Bend Test of Insulation Materials

Flexure testing of block thermal insulation used in construction can be subjected to a wide variety of loads, including transverse surface loading. This transverse loading can come from dead and live loads on foam block used in roofing or loads applied by earth fill on block used for concrete wall performs. The bending strength of foam block must be tested to determine the resistance of block insulation to transverse loads and for quality control measures. Bending strength can be determined using 3 and 4 point bend tests. To maintain uniform applied load on the test specimen, it can be desirable to have articulating loading bars or rollers on the bend test fixture to allow realignment of the contact surfaces with material deformations during the test. ASTM and European standards have been developed for test methods for testing the flexural and bending properties of rigid thermal insulation materials. Popular standards are ASTM C203, which contains multiple procedures to accommodate small and large deflections and various loading conditions, and EN 12089 for 3 point bending of full size products and test specimens. Flexural bend testing of foam block can be conducted using constant rate of extension or constant rate of load machines. For testing to ASTM standards for foam block insulation, bend fixtures must have self aligning bearing surfaces to maintain full contact and uniform load application throughout the test. The machines and fixtures below are configurable to meet ASTM requirements.
