Bond Strength of Labels per ASTM D6252, ASTM D903 & ASTM D6195
Ensuring product labels are securely attached to products and packaging is a key element to quality branding for your company. Adhesion bond strength can be quantified in terms of peel strength, bonding strength, and sheer strength. These mechanical properties are best obtained by following a standard test procedure from an accredited organization such as ISO, ASTM, and EN.
90 degree label peel test per ASTM D6252
ASTM D6252 is by far the most common label peel test standard. ASTM D6252 uses a standardized 90 degree peel technique by peeling a 1 inch wide strip label material off of a stainless steel plate at 12 inches per minute. It requires a sliding 90 degree peel table, which is pulled with a cable assembly to ensure the 90 degree peel angle is maintained throughout the length of the peel. TestResources provides sliding peel tables, designed to be integrated into any of our peel test machines.
180 degree peel test per ASTM D903 &
loop track adhesion test per ASTM D6195
ASTM D903 is another standard test method to determine the average peel strength of adhesive materials. It is a 180 degree peel test. The adhesive material is placed on a plate and one end is pulled back 180 degrees at a constant rate of extension. ASTM D6195 is done to determine the initial sticking force of an adhesive product, typically pressure sensitive tape, Teflon films, labels, and so on. The bonding strength of labels can be determined with a peel test performed by one of TestResources universal test machine.
Equipment required
TestResources universal material testing machines are effectively used for determining the peel strength, bonding strength, and sheer properties of adhesives. TestResources test machines meet the requirements specified in many standard test procedures for constant-rate-of-extension and constant-rate-of-load machines. This allows the machines to be programmed to perform many unique testing procedures. Load cells are fitted to specific load applications to ensure the highest resolution of tests.
