Planar biaxial test systems assist with the characterization of natural biological tissues and tissue derived soft biomaterials. Soft tissue includes ligaments, tendons, fascia, skin, fibrous tissues, fat synovial membranes, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. TestResources offers a 574L series of planar biaxial testers which produces a two dimensional stress state that can be used to characterize the mechanical properties of these soft tissues. Tissue sample preparation is simplified with the 574L series tester because special sample markers are not typically needed. The setup is also simplified because the test sample only requires an applied random speckle pattern (paint).
During the test, users are able to choose the strain measurement at the location of interest. Both standard and special strain tensors such as Lagrange primary, secondary and shear strain measurements are included and results automatically provided. All raw data is made available (displacements and strains) for further reporting and analysis needs. E-VID strain data features high signal to noise ratio (strain noise band is better than 0.02%). The stress-strain curve of soft tissues is nonlinear and so have the potential to undergo large deformations and still come back to their initial configuration when unloaded. Soft tissues are usually anisotropic, viscoelastic and incompressible. Viscoelastic properties include relaxation, creep and hysteresis. It is important to obtain high-quality strain data.
The 574L series planar biaxial test system features an optional leading edge non contacting digital video extensometer. The camera is based on digital image correlation (DIC) and mounted above the bath and test sample to provides real-time displacement and strain data.
