The tearing strength of fabrics by the trapezoid procedure may be determined using the test method specified in ASTM D5587. The measured tearing strength of the specimen provides information on the fabrics ability to resist a continuous tear from a sharp object such as a nail or screw. The test specimen is cut in the shape of an isosceles trapezoid and then a small cut is made on one side of the trapezoid. The specimen is clamped in the jaw faces in a manner which allows the tear to propagate as the jaws move apart. The jaws should be of a design that prevents slippage of the fabric sample during the test. Force and extension data is recorded that subsequently allows the trapezoid tearing strength to be calculated.
