Gray Iron Casting Dumbbell Samples - Tensile Testing

The tensile testing of gray iron castings may be performed according to the procedures specified in ASTM A48. The specimens used in this test may be referred to as a “dumbbell”, “dogbone” or “button-end” depending on the specific shape of the sample, where the shouldered ends of the sample are placed in the grips of the machine. This test is designed for gray iron castings used in general engineering where tensile strength is a major factor.
