
Shielded nuclear radiation containment chambers are commonly referred to as hot cells. The word "hot" refers to the presence of radioactivity. Hot cells are used in both the nuclear-energy and the nuclear-medicines industries and are required to protect test operators from radioactive isotopes by providing a safe containment box in which they can control and manipulate fatigue testers and universal test machines. The test machine is specially constructed to both survive the radioactive environment as well as to enable remote control via cell manipulators or robotic arms. The machine shown is designed so that the load frame can be spun 360 degrees which gives additional access freedom.
