The breaking strength and elongation of textile fabrics may be determined using the strip method specified in ASTM D5035. The test methods outlined in ASTM D5035 cover both raveled strip and cut strip test procedures. To determine the breaking force of a specific width of woven fabric the raveled strip procedure is generally used, whereas, the cut strip test is generally used for determining the breaking strength of nonwoven fabrics, felted fabrics, and dipped or coated fabrics. The breaking force information on woven fabrics is particularly useful for comparison of the effective strength of the yarns in the fabric with the combined strength of an equal number of the same yarns which are not woven. For both test methods provisions may be made for the testing of the materials in both the dry or wet condition. The tensile properties of fabrics, specifically the maximum force and elongation at maximum force, may be determined using the strip method detailed in ISO 13934-1. The method is mainly applicable to woven textile fabrics, including fabrics which exhibit stretch characteristics imparted by the presence of an elastomeric fiber, mechanical, or chemical treatment. It can be applicable to fabrics produced by other techniques. It is not normally applicable to geotextiles, nonwovens, coated fabrics, textile-glass woven fabrics, and fabrics made from carbon fibers or polyolefin tape yarns.
